Italian Beginners (Level 1) – with Cristina Nugent

The Beginners course aims to give students the opportunity to learn basic Italian vocabulary and grammar within the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and to gain confidence in understanding and using the language as well as to learn more about Italian culture.  No previously knowledge is required. 

Material required: Pen, notebook and texbook Contatti 1 Italian Activity Book (3rd edition, however 1st or 2nd edition is fine) by Mariolina Freeth and Giuliana Checkett (available from Amazon or Ebay).

Italian Intermediate (Level 2) – with Cristina Nugent

The Intermediate course is suitable for those students who have studied Italian at least three terms. As well as enriching the knowledge of the Italian language and culture the course aims to consolidate the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. To develop authentic pronunciation and intonation. Expand vocabulary to converse with confidence. Promote speaking, listening and reading. To practice skills in writing complex sentences. Grammar will also be an important part of the course to perfect the language.

Italian Upper Intermediate (Level 3) – with Cristina Nugent

The Upper Intermediate course is suitable for those students who have studied Italian at least for two years at the Intermediate level. As well as extending the knowledge of the Italian language and culture the course aims to refine the four language skills : speaking, listening, reading and writing.

  • To boost up authentic pronunciation and intonation.
  • Enrich vocabulary and grammar to converse and write with ability and confidence.
  • Stimulate reading and listening skills to advance the speed of understanding of the language. Conversations and discussions on various topics and current news are part of this course and conducted as far as possible in the target language.

Italian Advanced Conversation (Level 4) – with Cristina Nugent

Wednesdays 14th January to 25th March 2026 (No class on 18.02.26), 7.45-9.15pm, 10 Weeks£110 at Swavesey Village College – Boardroom

The Advanced/Conversation course is suitable for those students who have studied Italian at least for three years at the Upper Intermediate level. A very good understanding of the structure and basic grammar is required, together with the ability to read and understand original materials. Students are expected to actively contribute to class discussions on a wide range of topics including social issues, literature and cinema. The course will be based mainly on conversation and class discussions on specific topics, covering a wide range of cultural, geographical, social and historical aspects of Italy. There will be, however, some revision of specific elements of grammar and some written activities.

The aim of this advanced course is :

  • To deepen the knowledge of the country in all its aspects
  • To practice and develop the language to attain high standards
  • To broaden the vocabulary and to consolidate the most difficult key elements of grammar
  • To be able to use the language outside the classroom with assured knowledge of the Italian language

Beginners French (Level 1) – With Jean-Louis Barges

Tuesdays 13th January to 24th March 2026 (No class on 17.02.26), 6.00-8.00pm, 10 Weeks, £135 at Swavesey Village College – Boardroom

This course is intended for complete beginners as well as those with a little knowledge of French. They will learn to understand conversational situations: dialogues to listen to and documents to read. They will acquire the necessary vocabulary to order from a menu at a restaurant, ask for information, talk about their likes and preferences, etc. They will also learn the basic grammar needed to speak good French. Finally, they will have the opportunity to discover everyday life in France and become familiar with French culture.
