Mosaics – An introduction

Mondays, 23rd of February to 23rd March 2026, 7-9pm, 5 Weeks£55 at Swavesey Village College – Art Room

Course description:

Have fun creating colourful mosaics. Whilst all abilities are welcome, this course is ideally suited to those with basic or no previous mosaicking experience.

You will make mosaics including coasters and pots, which will liven up your home or make beautiful gifts. This will involve simple tiling techniques, using various tile materials on different bases. You will also mix and apply grout to your mosaics for that finished look. We will also consider how colours and shapes work together, plus other aspects of mosaic design.

All work will be carried out in class, with guidance and supervision.

All materials and equipment will be provided. Material costs are included.

What to bring:

A container in which to carry items home and back between classes. For the first week, a box around 12 x 12cm (e.g. a Tupperware or margarine tub) will be sufficient. 

Wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, particularly for the grouting sessions.

Beginners Knitting

Thursdays, 5th of March to 26th of March 2026, 7-9pm, 4 Weeks£36 at Swavesey Village College – Music Room 1

For knitting, you will learn how to hold needles, cast on and knit and purl – which are the basic stitches for all knitting as well as how to cast off. We will be creating knitted squares to allow us to practise the stitches learnt, understand how stitch patterns are created and how to increase and decrease. By the end of the course you will have the skills to knit a scarf, knitted squares as well as have the skills to build on to learn more complex knitting skills.

This course is aimed at beginners as well as improvers who might have tried to master the basics but got stuck along the way!

Granny Squares are crocheted squares that can be joined to make blankets, cushion covers, jackets – and are now all the rage – learn the different techniques needed to make granny squares. Grow your repertoire of crochet stitches and learn how to make crochet squares, hexagons, circles and more complex lace and crochet overlay techniques. We will learn joining techniques so that by the end, you will have the required skills to make your own crochet blanket!

This class is suitable for slightly advanced beginners – you must know how to do basic crochet stitches – single and double crochet stitches. You will be required to bring your own hooks and yarn for the course,  you will be given details on what these are prior to the course starting.

If you love to experiment with new materials and want to explore your creativity in a supporting group of like-minded students, then come and join us.

This class aims to expand and develop your ways of working, taking inspiration from a range of different subjects, and historical and contemporary artists.

Techniques are demonstrated, artistic principles applied and knowledge shared.

Mondays, 2nd February to 23rd February 2026 (no lesson on 16.02.26), 7-9pm, 4 WeeksExtra lesson will be added before half-term. £36 at Swavesey Village College – Music Room 1

This beginners course will show you the basics of crochet so you can learn in a hands-on way to start crocheting. The benefit of an in person course rather than online is so that you can be shown at your own pace how to start. On this course, we will start with basics about different weight and materials of yarn, crochet hooks, what gauge is. We will then move on to learning how to hold a crochet hook, start a foundation chain and all the basic stitches needed to create all crochet patterns. We will start with creating some basic granny squares before moving onto some more special stitches, increasing and decreasing and then learning how to join them. By the end of the course you will have the skills to make a simple crochet piece as well as use them as a foundation for learning more complex crochet techniques.

Ceramics for beginners

Wednesdays 4th February to March 18th 2026, (no class 18.02.26), 7-9pm, 6 Weeks£120 at Swavesey Village College – Art Room

Course description: 

Whilst all abilities are welcome, this course is ideally suited to those with basic or no previous experience. This course is run by two experienced tutors who will guide you through getting creative with hand building. Create some seasonal items as well as possible gifts for others. Seasonal being Easter! Plus, Mother’s Day is just around the corner no better than hand made items for the ones we love. We will demonstrate hand building techniques and then the choice is yours, you are free to make what you wish.

All materials and equipment will be provided. Material costs are included.
