‘Giving The Sporting Stars Of The Future A Flying Start’
Over 30 students from surrounding Primary schools have been taking part this year in a new program designed to give year 5 and 6 students the opportunity to experience sport at Swavesey Village College.
Selected students from Bar Hill, Pendragon, Fen Drayton, Elsworth, Swavesey and Fenstanton have been coached by year 10 Sports Leaders at Swavesey Village College in numerous sports offered at the college including the following:
- Dodge Ball
- Fitness Training
- Rock Climbing
- Tag Rugby
- Mountain Biking
- And Much, Much More…
It is the aim of the Swavesey Shining Stars Academy to progress student’s physical literacy through the development of fundamental motor skills important to every day physical activity. Fundamental motor skills, such as the run, leap, catch and overhand throw, form the building blocks which underpin the learning of more complicated sport and movement skills common to the community and secondary education. Without fundamental motor skill competence, students are less likely to learn related sport and movement skills.
Fundamental motor skill competence has been shown to influence students in many ways. Students who have achieved fundamental motor skill competence have been found to successfully participate in a range of sports and movement activities and maintain involvement during childhood and into adolescence.
Regular involvement in sport and movement activities leads to gains in health-related physical fitness. How students feel about themselves can be influenced by their physical skills. Students who have achieved fundamental motor skill competence have been found to perceive themselves as being competent, socially accepted and to have a positive attitude towards physical activity. In essence, fundamental motor skill competence assists in preparing students for a healthy lifestyle.
In response, we have constructed a program of study designed to prepare students, within the Swavesey Village College Catchment area, considered gifted and talented in the field of sport and PE to excel in sporting competition upon entry into secondary education and look to continued participation in sport long into adolescence.Shining Stars
