New Diplomas
Diplomas are an exciting qualification designed to give students valuable skills for life. They involve hands-on learning which is fun, exciting and teaches skills your child will need in the future.
Diplomas have been developed by schools, colleges, universities and employers working together. They are set to become one of the three main education options – alongside GCSEs and Apprenticeships – and they can take students on to college, university or the career of their choice.
By 2013 there will be 17 Diploma Lines (different subject areas) available to students at Swavesey. From September 2009 students at Swavesey will have the opportunity to study on one of two diploma lines:
Diplomas are a professional suite of qualifications and are focused on giving students the opportunity to study at a level that will enable them to go on to A-level and University study eventually entering the world of work equipped to undertake a career in professions as diverse as architecture, civil engineering or salon management.
The courses at Swavesey have been developed with local employers to ensure students get a realistic experience of the industry. They are also designed to sit alongside existing qualifications and will integrate seamlessly with the current diverse curriculum offer at the college.
If a student opts for a diploma it will not be the only course they undertake, the diploma will simply take up 2 of their 4 options and the other aspects of the diploma will be integrated into their core curriculum. An example of how this might look for a typical year 10 students is given below.
The various components that make up the full diploma are outlined in the diagram.
