Humanities
Humanities spans the subjects of Geography, History and Religious Education. The three subjects are not integrated, but many topics have degrees of inter-relation, for example; Citizenship, Economic and Industrial Understanding and Environmental issues. Information Technology is becoming more important with data retrieval and word-processing.
Students are taught in Tutor groups in Year 7. Year 8 and Year 9 are placed in broad bands of ability. In Years 10 and 11 students can opt to study the Humanities at GCSE level. Years 7 to 9 have two lessons per week for Geography and History. In Years 10/11 students have five lessons every two weeks. In Years 7 to 11 all students have one lesson of Religious Education or Ethics per week. GCSE Religious Studies is also an option.
Most of the students' work is done in exercise books. On occasions students are required to complete work on larger paper or write projects in booklet form. As well as the acquisition of factual knowledge and subject related skills, the Faculty puts strong emphasis on organisation and presentation of written work. There are precise homework and marking policies in all these subjects.
We aim to encourage students to develop an awareness of their World through its past and present and be aware of future trends, to appreciate different cultures, the circumstances in which people live, their values and their points of view. We aim to help students comprehend the World they will soon enter, to be concerned and informed citizens.
