Governors

At Swavesey Village College the Governing Body is responsible for the policy, strategic direction and overall management of the school. Acting as 'Critical Friends' the governors work with the management team of the college and play a vital role in promoting high standards of educational achievement, this serves the best interest of our current and future pupils.

The College Governing Body consists of twenty members who include:

Seven parents of pupils

Five community representatives

One Childrens Authority (formally Local Education Authority) governors

Three of the school staff (one teaching, one non-teaching and Principal)

Four Foundation Governors

The Governing Body Clerk.

The role of chairing the Governing Body is subject to an annual ballot of all Governors. As unpaid voluntary public servants, the governing body work to sustain the school’s identity and provide a link with the local community. As with other schools, this is balanced by the senior staff responsibility for day to day running of the school and dealing with students directly.

Members of the Governing Body are made up from all walks of life and serve for a term of office of four years. Governors are sought from a wide section of the local and professional community and current membership reflects this. Parent members are elected by ballot of the families of the students of SVC. Once on the governing body every representative is encouraged not only to attend regular meetings but also to link with a specific area of the college curriculum. Through these links a strong bond develops with the college staff, management and pupils. Governors who have skills that can benefit the student body often appear at the college to assist the teaching staff and attend at house events and presentations.

We are fortunate that the SVC Governing Body has been characterised by its stability, a number of our members have served for at least two terms of office, and some for three or four. However it is also both unusual and rewarding that when vacant posts do occur we are usually oversubscribed with very committed and energetic applicants. Consequently elections are held, and this brings fresh ideas to complement existing experience. We would encourage you to contact us if you are interested in joining the governing body.
