Fitness for the Family

Fitness For The Family at Swavesey Village College As a Specialist Science College, Swavesey Village College is committed to encouraging a wider knowledge of practical Science in the local community. As part of this commitment and in conjunction with the College's aim to become recognised as a health promoting school we are providing a health and fitness course for pupils and their parents/carers. The course is aimed at pupils in year 9 and over with either one or both of their parents/carers and will allow them to follow practical and theory sessions on health and fitness over 10 weeks. The aim of the course is to encourage families to engage in physical activities together, and to learn about the importance and enjoyment to be gained from a healthy lifestyle and involvement in sporting activities.

The course involves a gym session every week along with a range of other sporting activities and theory sessions designed to increase knowledge and understanding of different sports and how to have a healthy lifestyle.

Activities taking place include;

  1. An induction course into use of the Gym facilities
  2. Training in how to use equipment that will enable self assessment prior to & following the course
  3. A series of classroom sessions on a range of health issues:-
    • First aid (with children's young lifesaver certification)
    • Fitness monitoring with heart rate monitors
    • Diet and nutrition
    • Heart health
    • An introduction to the range of available local community sports and games
    A chance to try out a range of sports and games in the sports hall
  4. Final assessment and progress report with information pack and certification of course completion

Sessions run each Saturday from late January until March, from 2.00 - 4.00 with a 1 hour session in the Gym and a 1 hour session in the classroom or sports hall.

The course is free to pupils of Swavesey Village College in year 9 or over attending the sessions with one or both of their parents. Pupils attain the young lifesavers certificate for participation in the First Aid session and everyone completing the course receives a certificate of participation outlining their achievements.
