Careers Guidance at Swavesey Village College
“the guidance that students receive throughout their time at school in relation to courses and careers is excellent. The procedures for helping students to transfer from primary school are good, as is the advice offered to those about to embark on sixth form study. “ (Ofsted Oct 2006)
The Careers Department at Swavesey has operated at a high standard of delivery for many years, lead by The Careers Guidance Leader.
It has been highly praised by Ofsted, and is recognised by
The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Connexions Service as one delivering of a high quality careers guidance programme, one which is used to help other schools match their quality of provision.
The Department has its own base, complete with interview facilities, and computerised access, networked across the whole School.
Careers Education and Guidance is delivered in a variety of ways. It is central to the work of every Form-Tutor, and forms part of the pastoral work which links every Tutor to their respective tutees from all Year groups.
Aspects of delivery are also developed through Conference days and also through guided and extended assemblies.
The Department is responsible for all Post 16 applications mainly through the Cambridge Area 14-19 Partnership (formally the Cambridge Collegiate Board) pertaining to Further Education, Apprenticeships and Employment. This liaison work also extends to other establishments outside of the Cambridge area. Destination information of ex-pupils is tracked throughout the FE phase and onto HE and beyond.
The Department also oversees the Year 10 Work Experience programme, matching pupils to placements, ensuring that health and safety procedures are followed, and in the visiting of Tutors to placements.
The Department also co-ordinates all applications for pupil part- time work and is responsible for ensuring that references for ex-pupils are dealt with as per respective requirements.
Working closely with the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Connexions Service, all pupils are entitled to impartial individual guidance interviews, as well as maintaining and continually developing a fully resource reference library and information access point.
On line facilities have been invested heavily in recent years, and are available for all pupils and staff to access at any time. These include Pupil self assessment programmes, careers information databases, and access to other websites attaining to all aspects of transition through Secondary Education.
